Challenge – Commoning Spaces Network

Affordable housing is one of the most pressing social and political challenges in Europe today. Increasingly, low-income and vulnerable groups—as well as young people, the elderly, families, and even the middle class—are struggling to secure adequate housing.

Rents and property prices continue to rise, energy costs are soaring, and housing markets remain unstable. As a result, more and more people face the risk of losing their homes or never finding one at all.

At the same time, many urban areas and entire neighborhoods across Europe have an abundance of vacant spaces and unused buildings—many of which have become targets of speculative financial practices rather than serving the needs of communities.

This crisis demands urgent, collective action to reclaim housing as a fundamental right, not a commodity.
